Board-certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. Thomas Magill joined Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute in 2014. The son of an orthopedic surgeon, he has had a lifetime of learning in the field of orthopedics, and his practice focuses on sports and reconstructive surgery of the shoulders, hips, and knees, including cartilage transplant, general hand and extremity surgery, and the muscle-sparing anterior approach to total hip replacement. Dr. Magill uses the latest techniques, and he was the first surgeon to perform a cartilage transplant in the area. He routinely utilizes the newer, muscle-sparing approach to total hip replacements. He also uses the arthroscope when performing many shoulder surgeries that previously required open incisions.

A Colorado native, Dr. Magill completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. His roots in the Midwest were later established during his medical school training at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, followed by his general surgery internship and orthopedic surgery residency at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. There, he was fortunate enough to work with the professional sports teams in Chicago, including the Cubs, Bears, and Bulls.

Dr. Magill spends his free time with his wife and family. He also enjoys photography, skiing, and traveling.

“My son is 15 years old and very active in my different sports. Everyone has always told us how lucky we are that no one has ever had a broken bone and then he broke his leg at wrestling practice early January. It seemed we had ran into some bad luck, until we met Dr. Magill and his staff. I felt at ease the minute we wheeled him into the office. Dr. Magill, along with the rest of his staff, treated my son as if he was family. Even though it was January, all my son could do was think about football season (8 months away) and Dr. Magill assured him he would be ready to go. He even joked with him about having that "orange and black jersey on" (he explained he was the team Dr for LaPorte), which then Hunter responded with "Why? I will be wearing Blue and Gold, I go to New Prairie". That was when my husband and I knew Hunter would be in great hands. Dr. Magill then told Hunter he would have to find another way to keep off the field being we are such huge rivals. I would recommend Dr. Magill to everyone, and already have! He was great with not only Hunter but always took the time to answer any questions my husband or I had. As a family, we look forward to seeing Dr. Magill at the next LaPorte vs New Prairie football game!!!”
