Aaron K. Ruter, D.P.M., is a fellowship-trained surgical podiatrist specializing in foot and ankle trauma, reconstruction, total ankle replacement, diabetic limb salvage, and diabetic nerve care. Since joining Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute in 2017, he has focused on helping patients move forward after injuries, arthritis, deformities, chronic wounds, nerve-related pain, and diabetic complications.
A former member of the Saint Joseph’s College track and field program, Dr. Ruter understands how much mobility can affect a person’s independence and quality of life. He is especially passionate about helping patients facing difficult injuries or complications find treatment options that support healing and help them stay active.

Dr. Ruter earned his Bachelor of Science from Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. He then received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine in Independence, Ohio. He completed his reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery residency through Midwestern University and Franciscan Alliance in Dyer, Indiana, followed by a foot and ankle fellowship at Indiana Foot & Ankle in Jasper, Indiana. His fellowship training emphasized diabetic nerve care and surgery, diabetic limb salvage, and lower extremity reconstruction.
Dr. Ruter is board-certified in foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.
He is also a faculty member, fellow, and elected board member of The Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons, where he helps teach other surgeons and advance the diagnosis and treatment of extremity nerve conditions. He served as the Association’s president through 2026.
In his off time, Dr. Ruter enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He also enjoys fishing, the outdoors, and teaching.
