“If I hadn’t had the knee replacement six months ago, I’d be in a wheelchair right now,” says Ron B., a semi-retired electrician who can again climb ladders and work on his two 57 Chevys.
By the time Ron came to Lakeshore Bone and Joint, his knee had moved an inch and a half off center, “one of the five worst I’ve seen,” Dr. Bruce Toma told him while discussing treatment options. With excruciating pain that kept him awake at night, Ron chose a total knee replacement and is completely happy with the outcome.
Anxious to drive after his surgery just a few weeks after surgery, Ron pressed his physical therapists for permission. “They suggested I go to the Hobart High School parking lot to practice. I made sure I could brake and accelerate there before getting on the road again,” he recalled.
“I think that recovery is what you make it, and I can’t say enough about the therapists (Ernest and Gloria) who helped me get where I am.”
He also has high praise for his surgeon. “Dr Toma was patient and kind. He explained what I could expect and took the time to explain the procedure to my entire family while I was being prepped for surgery. I was a patient of Dr. Malayter in the 1990s. When he retired, I asked for the guy with the most seniority and was given an appointment with Dr. Toma. Lakeshore has excellent doctors and facilities; they were good in the 90s and are ten times better now.”
Ron says his arthritic knees were brought on by “too many birthdays” and looks forward to having his other knee replaced later this year. “Right now I have one good knee, getting them both back will be great.”
